Because I’m kind of lazy and because I don’t know how many more years Sarah Kate is going to be into coordinating her costume with her brother’s, I thought we’d take a walk down memory lane and see what the kids were up to on Halloween in years past.
2011 – Pebbles and Bamm Bamm
The genesis for this idea was that Nathan looked like Bamm Bamm and he banged things a lot. I died one of Nathan’s onesies with tea and made the rest out of felt. The bone in Sarah Kate’s hair is Daisy’s dog bone.
2012 – Padme Amidala and R2D2
This one was kind of twofer and kind of a reflection of my laziness. My friend Katie got married the last week of October that year, and she’s crazy about R2D2. Both of the kids were in the wedding, and I bought the R2D2 costume as a surprise for Nathan to wear at the reception (also, the wedding was at Walt Disney World and we hit Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party while we were in town). I originally had planned for Sarah Kate to be Princess Leia, but I didn’t want to pay Leia costume prices and I was too lazy to make one. Most people still thought she was Leia, which was okay with her, but she beamed when one of the ride operators at Disney yelled, “Hey, Padme!”
2013 – Joan of Arc and her horse
Once again, mom went with the twofer. Sarah Kate needed a costume for an Alabama history play at school, so we bought this costume for that, added the wig and cross, and found a horse costume for Nathan. Winning.
2014 – Wonder Woman and Superman
2014 was The Year of the Surgery, so I went with easy and bought two costumes. I have no idea why we chose superheroes – I don’t think it was Sarah Kate’s idea, but I could be wrong. I do recall wanting to do Violet and Dash from The Incredibles but we couldn’t find a Violet in Sarah Kate’s size. And for 2015 (drum roll, please…)
Harry Potter and Hermione!
I wish I could say I planned this one well in advance and that I made the costumes by hand, but in truth, this year’s ensemble was an absolute fluke. I tried to pin Sarah Kate down for weeks about who/what she wanted to be, with no success. Early last week, I decided Nathan could be Superman again and she could either be Wonder Woman or come up with something else on her own.
But then…on Wednesday, my friend Beth posted a picture from a few years ago of her son dressed as Harry Potter. He. Was. Adorbs. She volunteered to let me borrow the costume, but she wasn’t sure she could find the tie or the glasses. We needed a tie and glasses.
And then…on Thursday, I met my friend Shannon for a run. We talked about Halloween and I mentioned how Nathan might be Harry Potter and I thought it would be adorbs BUT I hated that he and Sarah Kate wouldn’t match this year. As luck would have it, she had TWO Harry Potter outfits (she has boy-girl twins). Complete ensemble for Sarah Kate? Check. Glasses and tie for Nathan? Check.
And they may have been the most magical Halloween duo ever.

I’m glad you were feeling lazy because I love this post! Super cute photos, love the brother-sister team costumes, and it’s so fun to watch the pics in order. Fun to see Sarah Kate move from a little girl to a young lady. That girl is gorgeous.
