Have you ever seen the movie Parenthood?
Steve Martin is the main father character and there’s a scene late in the movie where his youngest runs onstage at his older sister’s school play. Long story short, madness ensues and Steve Martin’s character initially stresses out about how his kid is ruining the play, but after a moment comes to realize that the whole thing is pretty dang funny.
That was me at Nathan’s t-ball game last night.
Mr. Andi wasn’t able to be at the game and Sarah Kate had show choir practice, so I was on my own. I optimistically brought my camera, and in the end it was a good decision. He did a decent job during warmups, fielding and throwing and whatnot.
The Red Sox batted first, and this time the players batted in jersey order (they alternate between regular order and reverse order each game), meaning Nathan was the third batter up to the plate. We were the away team, so the opposing team’s spectators were seated along the first base line.
He hit the ball, grabbed his wobbly helmet, and took off, grinning at them the whole way.
And when I say “the whole way” I really do mean The Whole Way.
He’s mostly getting the hang of the running the bases thing, although he does usually take off from second pretty late, since there’s no coach there to keep him focused.
Remember when I said he holds his helmet and grins the whole way?
Not surprisingly, fielding is not his favorite part. And it was a late game. And I’m sure when Mr. Andi sees the photo below, he will be appalled that I did not make Nathan stand up. By this point, I was just happy he was on the field and being still, unlike in the previous inning. Ahem.
Coach (Saint) Brian was on it, however. Bless him.
This game may have been the best one EVER as far as Nathan was concerned, because he got to bat three times. And run and grin a lot.
His last at bat he was stranded on second base. He didn’t much care for the idea of heading to the dugout to grab his glove and do some more fielding, so he chose instead to throw his batting helmet into the outfield. At this particular moment there was no one on the field other than him and this young man who was our official for the evening.
This was the moment when I did the Steve Martin impression and relaxed and laughed. And snapped a photo.

Have you heard that the young woman on the cover of Women’s Running magazine has autism, cerebral palsy and epilepsy? I think Sarah Kate would love to see it.
