The day I’d been fearing finally arrived.
Yesterday, I loaded the kids up and headed for (first) the middle school, then the elementary school. After going back and forth several times about whether it would be best to park in a disability space or just go through the regular line, we opted for regular line. All went well except for the unforeseen issue of having to open the car door on an uphill slant. Sarah Kate struggled with the door, backpack, and cane, but eventually managed to make it out and into the school.
She didn’t want to use the wheelchair this year, so we’re all on board with that plan. I’m hoping chair-free is still a viable plan when the backpack is heavier and her clarinet case gets added into the mix.
After the middle school drop off was completed, I headed across town to deliver Package #2. At the prearranged time, Miss Allison emerged from the building for Nathan, and he jumped right out of the car like he’d been doing it for years. He took her hand and headed toward the red brick building; I tried to snap a photo but he gave me the serious look that said, “Go away, Mom. I’ve got this.”
And that was that.
I got back in my car, drove home, uploaded my handful of First Day photos to the computer, and cried … just a little bit.

I am so proud of them..I can’t believe he is already starting school. I feel like he was born and we saw you in church to meet him. Great job Sarah Kate for the no w/c… your such a strong and drive young women. Love yall!!!

Glad to hear everything went so well. I knew you could do it. You talk a lot about how strong your kids are, especially Sarah Kate–and wow, are you ever right!–but you are strong also. I hope the rest of the year continues to go smoothly for you, and/or that the bumps you encounter will be small ones. 🙂

So have loved your. Log and watching them grow. I am not sure if SK’S school will all I w it, but some of the high schools now issue a set of books for home and keep 1 set in class. That way the backpacks were not so heavy.
Andi says
I inquired about that last year, but they don’t really have books anymore because they all have MacBook Air computers instead. The weight is caused by her many notebooks, rather than the textbooks themselves. The school also doesn’t have lockers – kids are expected to carry their books with them all day – so that is a challenge.

Could there be an accomadation that she can leave the notebooks she doesn’t need for homework that night in that teachers classroom? Just to relive some of the weight. How does she like middle school? Can she make it to class in the allotted time?
Andi says
Possibly. The school has been very attentive and accommodating so far – we just need to figure out what the problems are then go from there. It always takes a week or two to get at all the kinks. 🙂
Andi says
Oh, and yes…she is making it on time. The cafeteria is sort of in the middle of the building so she was given permission to cut through there – in most cases it makes for a shorter walk, and avoids the crowded hallways.
Kathryn says
I don’t know how her school works but it may be a good idea for her to keep a pass in her bag saying she can walk through there just in case she gets stopped. I do that during finals weeks so I can get to the Nurse’s office.
Anna says
Am I in over my head? Will I fall flat on my face? They’ll live their lives all on the first day.
