I had grand plans for a beautiful post with lots of photos today, describing how special it was to help Nathan – a Big Boy now! – with his homework. BWAHAHAHA! Just kidding, of course. Homework has been the bane of my existence since Sarah Kate was a wee lass in kindergarten in 2008. I did, however, hope to have more substance today, but I got a new Mac this week and I chose Wednesday to migrate from the old one. It started around 7:00 am and as I type this post at around 9:00 pm, it still isn’t finished, but I have hope that it will be done by the time this post goes up at 6:00 am on Thursday. So I’m scrambling now to put up a skeleton of my original concept.
The best laid plans, right?
Honestly, though, today was my first stab at the kindergarten homework (and lest anyone freak out that a five year old has homework, it’s things like writing his name and practicing counting).
The plan was for Mr. Andi to be the homework parent, but I decided today that I should probably do it because right after school it’s just Nathan and me at home (Sarah Kate goes directly to swim team after school) and things are a lot less chaotic than later in the evening after Mr. Andi gets home.
Do you love the flowery purple lap desk? Very boy-ish, no? Clearly, the lap desk belongs to Sissy, but it was such a beautiful day (read: not a sauna) that there was no way I was going to make that boy (or myself) sit inside for the homework. It probably took us about 50% longer to complete than it should have, but…fresh air and sunshine.
He can’t quite write his name without help yet (well, he can but you’d never recognize it, because while the letters might be semi-recognizable, they are rarely organized in an orderly left-to-right fashion), so I wrote his name in the blanks with a yellow highlighter for him to trace.
In the end, I survived the homework – just barely – and I’ll hope for more beautiful afternoons while we get into our afternoon routine. Kindergarten is a whole new ballgame, but there’s always a new bridge to cross, always a new challenge to undertake, right?

That is excellent for the first day! And he’s got a great 3-finger pencil grip. I like the highlighter strategy — I am sure he will get the hang of it in no time! Good work, mama!

Ah, the joys (read: torture) of homework…

Aww! So cute! What is Sarah Kate looking forward to most this school year?
Andi says
She doesn’t know.
