Sun-Beams is a collection of links to stories, articles, photos, or videos I have come across that I believe will inspire, inform, or encourage you, as well as my favorite photo posted on my other blog, Violet Film, from the past week.
DJ who mocked a caller with Down Syndrome gets suspended – My Google Reader blew up with this story over the last week. Before you make a judgment on what went down, be sure to read the transcript at the bottom – and don’t skip over his rant at the end. Then let me know what you think about the story.
Homecoming Surprise for Tennessee Teen – Like I always say, these stories are about the peers, not the kid with a disability.
Dan and Me: My Coming Out as a Friend of Dan Cathy and Chick-fil-A – This op-ed has absolutely nothing to do with disability, but it does have to do with something I preach here often – that we should always see people as people first.
And finally…I’m not certain how much national attention this story is getting, but here in Alabama a five year old boy with autism has been held as a hostage since January 29 after he was snatched off of his school bus (the suspect shot and killed the driver). You can follow the Midland City shooting story here. Please pray that the boy is kept safe from harm and that the situation is resolved in the best possible way.

Hi Andi! I’m from running of the ears and I was just getting caught up with your blog.
My family owns and manages radio stations, and I am shocked by your first article for many reasons. First, I hate prank calls and radio djs making fun of anyone on the radio. I think it is completely disrespectful and not good radio! You want to make fun of people who listen to your show. That is just silly. Our DJs pre-record all calls because you never know what someone will say. Someone might call cursing up a storm at 3 pm, and that is also terrible publicity.
Ugh I’m actually probably overly mad about this story.

And some of the stories I read (don’t remember if this one did…they all run together) made it clear that the exchange WAS pre-recorded. So not only did he do it, but the decision was made by someone (him? others? both?) to air it after the fact.
Not cool.
