Sun-Beams is a collection of links to stories, articles, photos, or videos I have come across that I believe will inspire, inform, or encourage you, as well as my favorite photo posted on my other blog, Violet Film, from the past week.
Man with Down syndrome gains right to vote – Had it occurred to you before that he wouldn’t have been able to vote?
Comedian Wayne Brady Insults Trig Palin at Roseanne Roast – It’s not unusual for comedians to do things like Brady did, but I expect better from a clean comic who’s a regular on Sesame Street.
Dad completes triathlons with daughter who has cerebral palsy – “I think Madison has changed more peoples’ lives than I even know about – without doing anything”
Two Omahans with Down syndrome honored with Eagle Scout – A rare honor, even more rare for two people with Down syndrome to achieve it together.
Where’s the TV coverage of the Paralympics? – Have you ever seen wheelchair basketball? I have, years ago, and it’s ROUGH. I agree with this editorial – NBC should be able to find some airtime on at least one of its many networks.
Have you voted for Nathan yet in the Most Beautiful Eyes Contest? If not, do it now! 🙂

The dog days of summer have me slacking on my 365 project – still haven’t missed a day, but it’s been an iPhone kinda week.

I almost emailed you the triathlons story! I’m glad you shared it here. Wayne Brady did apologize publicly on Facebook. How do you feel about the sincerity/content of his apology? I agree we should expect more, but not just because he’s a regular on sesame street, but because we should just expect more, period. I’m sort of surprised-he’s one of the last I’d expect to go down that road.

I saw the apology and it seems to be heartfelt. I initially wasn’t going to post the link, because I knew he’d apologized and felt that was (mostly) adequate. It was very disappointing for someone with his reputation, but we all make mistakes. He probably considered the joke to be less about disability and more about politics, but regardless, it still involved insulting an innocent.
I think what disturbed me as much or more (and I should have said so above) is that the roast was pre-recorded, so not only did he say it, but other people in charge of editing made the conscious decision to leave it in.
