Sarah Kate’s final swim meet for the summer starts today. She’ll be swimming 50 freestyle, 25 backstroke, and (TADA!) 25 breaststroke. She hasn’t quite got the kick thing down, but the rules provide an exception for swimmers who are physically disabled in one or both legs, so she should be able to swim it “legally.” I’ll let you know how it turns out.
I’m shooting a wedding this weekend. Yes, I am terrified. It’s the wedding of my friend Sandy’s daughter. I’ve shot several weddings before, but always as a favor in cases where the bride and groom really needed to save money. I always figured if I did it for free, they’d be getting what they were paying for. 🙂 Olivia, however, told her mother months ago that she wanted ME to photograph the wedding. While I was honored, I was also initially resistant. What if I screw it up?
If you’re the praying sort, get cranked up tomorrow around 10am and don’t stop until the sun goes down. I want this event to go well.
Speaking of weddings – Nathan’s ringbearing debut is fast approaching. When my friends Katie and Steve got engaged last year, I was uber-enthusiastic about my kids being in the wedding. Now I’m still enthusiastic, but a tad apprehensive, as well. I’ve no doubt that Nathan will walk (or sprint) up the aisle. My concern is about what he’ll do when he gets there. Our friend Joey wants him to wear a Nate-cam like this one. Could be entertaining. As a belt buckle, maybe?
As I mentioned earlier this week, Sarah Kate is now more knowledgeable about the workings of the female body than she was last Friday. Coincidentally, Mandi Ehman published a post this week about why she was buying her eight year old her first bra. I thought she made a good point about introducing the bra earlier so it wouldn’t be a big deal when she actually needed one. It reminded me of when my sister (ten years my junior) hit “that age” and had a catastrophic meltdown when my mom and I tried to take her to buy her first bra. It. Was. Epic.
So now Sarah Kate has some bras. Two weeks ago I’d have run you out of town on a rail if you’d even suggested it.
Mr. Andi is, as many of you know, on the Alabama Council for Developmental Disabilities. He was appointed when Nathan was about six months old as a parent advocate. The Council’s quarterly magazine, ACDD Advocate, did a feature story on him in the current issue, and included some information about me and this blog, as well. I knew about the article, but when it came this week I was flabbergasted. I texted Mr. Andi and asked him who those people were, because they sounded really awesome and we are decidedly not that awesome. If you’d like to read the article, I’ve uploaded a PDF of the issue here – go to pages 18-21 (Tip: you’ll find out Mr. Andi’s real name, if you don’t know it already. Shhh….)
I think it’s time for a Stella update! She’s been with us for three months now (and I can’t think of a seventh snippet…) and I’m generally pleased with her progress. Her special needs have turned out to be significantly less special than I had feared, though Mr. Andi has stopped reaching down to pet her, opting instead to let her come to him when he’s sitting on the couch and whatnot (she dribbles a little pee every time he leans over to pet her). She’s also much less apprehensive now when we leave, is much calmer when we return, and doesn’t do nearly as much gnawing on our hands. So far so good.
Have a great weekend!

What an amazing article about Mr. Andi (and about you too)!
