For some reason, Nathan always seems to get sick late on Friday afternoons. If he’s going to have a fever, it’s always too late in the day on Friday to get a doctor’s appointment, and the fever is always low enough that it’s not worth an emergency room visit. By Monday morning, it’s gone.
This weekend, Nathan was sick. Nothing serious – just a low-grade fever and a little bit of lethargy. No mom likes to see her baby not feeling well, including me. But, I have to admit…now that he’s in GO GO GO Mode all of the time, it sure was heartwarming when a little fever made my tiny man want to snuggle instead of ram push toys into walls.
Instead of squirming to get away from me, Nathan melted into my lap. Instead of spending an hour chasing his mouth with bites of food or coaxing him to pick up the tiny bites on his highchair tray, I simply offered him sippy cups of milk, which he drank without interruption. We caught up on DVR’d episodes of Sesame Street, Burn Notice, Timmy Time, and Mad Men. The house was quiet and still, and I was the center of Nathan’s universe for the first time since he discovered the benefits of mobility. Yet in spite of the fever-induced lethargy, I could still smile at him and receive a slow, drowsy smile in return.
Monday came, and other than some undereye circles and a pale tint to the cheeks, there was no lingering sign of the sick boy. Cups and couch pillows were once again in danger of being thrown unceremoniously onto the floor. Wiggling and squirming replaced reclining in the Mom-O-Lounger. I’m glad that my boy is feeling better, but a little piece of me misses the bittersweet wonder of the sick child.
Am I the only one?

Glad it was nothing serious.

You are not the only one!! I also do not like seeing my boys sick but when they are I do get the very best cuddles! They usually both get sick at the same time too so I get a double dose of love.
