There’s an uneasy friendship (frenemy-ship?) brewing between the two youngest members of our household: our four year old West Highland White Terror Terrier, Daisy, and our seventeen month old Gulf Coast Boy Wonder, Nathan.
Both are cute. Both are playful. Both love walks with me down by the bay. Both are loads of fun. Both of them love their peeps like nobody’s business.
With all of these things in common, you’d think they’d be friends for life. Pals to the end. Forever buddies. But they aren’t, and as Nathan’s mom/Daisy’s BFF, I’m not sure why. Today, Daisy’s taking over the blog to put forth her case to you, my readers. Take it away, Daisy!
fren·e·my noun \ˈfre-nə-mē\
Definition: one who pretends to be a friend but is actually an enemy
Origin: blend of friend and enemy; first known use: 1977
The Good:
Nathan feeds me what he’s having (Chicken! Cheese!) from the highchair tray. I know he’s doing it on purpose because he looks at me and points before he drops it on the floor. He’s also delicious in his own right; he’s a sloppy drinker so he gets milk or juice on his face that I can lick off (BFF hates it when I do that, but I don’t see what the big deal is). Just today, he even had a graham cracker in his hand that he shared with me (although BFF accused me of stealing).
The Bad:
Nathan isn’t always easy to love. He grabs fistfuls of my hair with no regard for the fact that said hair is attached to my body and – doggone it! – it hurts when he pulls. A dog’s food bowl is a sacred place, but Nathan barges into the pantry and grabs fistfuls, throwing it willy-nilly into the air (that’s on a good day – on a bad day, he dumps the entire bowl on the floor). Add to that the fact that his stroller really restricts my ability to wander while out on a walk, and a dog just doesn’t get her day too much anymore. Don’t even get me started about the amount of attention he requires from BFF.
The Undecided:
BFF says that we’ll be buddies someday, but I’m not sure. She talks about how one day he’ll play chase in the yard and throw frisbees for me and be a great snuggler. She says that when he’s older and has a big boy bed that I’ll want to sleep with him like I do with Sarah Kate sometimes.
I’m not too sure about this kid, but I’m considering giving him a chance. What do you guys think?
Pam Dillon says
Absolutely. Give him a chance. He may be a bit of a pest sometimes, but he sure is cute!
